Christmas Eve...

And, in the same way the big candle was lit on the Blue Peter Advent Crown (not that I ever made one, where on earth do you get flameproof tinsel?), here's the final video in my countdown.

...what else could it be? The amazing Fairytale of New York. Love this song (but only the original, the modern, sanitised version does nothing for me, it's not meant to be tuneful, it's an argument!)

Late again, but the final week!

So, the final Sunday in Advent (was nearly a week ago, I know), however here's the accompanying song. It's been a firm favourite of mine ever since it came out. Possibly because of the Christmassy nature, possibly because it's a cracking tune, or...and this is the most likely reason, because I have a childish sense of humour ;) I do like to sing along to the chorus!

Late I know, but week three!

Something a bit more traditional this week. I really love this video- the style is beautiful, and goes so well with Annie Lennox's powerful yet haunting vocals.

Something of an "early cinema" vibe about the video, that's the best way to describe it I guess.

On a shallower note, I want her outfit (the walking one)!

Week two of the Advent Songs...

And here we are. Not really a song as such, however the first time I heard this it became a firm favourite. Mainly because it had me in hysterics.

It's a version of The Twelve Days of Christmas, as performed by Frank Kelly (best known as Father Jack from Father Ted, who sadly is another name on the long list of celebrities who have died this year). This was originally released in 1982. Enjoy!

So, for the past few years on Facebook I've been sharing an alternative Christmas song each Sunday in Advent and I thought it was time I shared them here too.

This is the first one, the Jolly YogsCast NSFW Sing-Along that is...

2016...can you cool it please?

It's only been a few weeks since I watched the BBC's "Review of the Year- those we've lost 2015", or however they brand the list of the celebrities that have died in the last 12 months. The last week or so has begun the 2016 list in earnest.

One of my favourite childhood films was Labyrinth, and that grew into a favourite film as a teen and beyond. As a child I liked the puppets and songs, and as a 19-year-old Goth sat in my halls of residence at uni watching the DVD on my computer I loved the beautiful Gothic love story too (as a child I felt the ballroom scene was boring, as a teen I loved it). It was that film that sparked my love of David Bowie's music - but I think this is a favourite (although I do tend to sing "Magic Pants..."):

I'm a fan of Harry Potter, but I think my favourite Alan Rickman role was that of the Metatron in Dogma. I think that's the definition of perfect casting right there.

"I'm pissed off, is what I am! Do you go around drenching everybody that comes into your room with flame-retardant chemicals? No wonder you're single."

NSFW, but genius!

And last, but by no means least, as a teenager I spent plenty of time in my bedroom listening to heavy metal. Motorhead were legends in the genre. I think picking up a copy of White Line Fever (Lemmy's autobiography) is going to happen very soon.
Ace of Spades has been played a lot lately, but I really like this collaboration with Girlschool...

So, RIP David Bowie, Alan Rickman and Lemmy.
...and 2016? I think you should slow down now. Thanks.
